A population projection is a calculation that describes the future development of a population – its size, age and sex structure, and composition by household or geographical area – based on an observed initial population and explicit assumptions regarding changes in the components of population change: fertility, mortality and migration. It is not a forecast in the strict sense, but rather a quantified and coherent representation of a set of assumptions: ‘if such trends continue, then such a population will result’.
