Context

Businesses are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions originating in France. According to the breakdown by product proposed by the General Commission for Sustainable Development, in 2018 around 74 per cent of the country’s carbon footprint was generated by the commercial sector, with the remainder coming from direct emissions from households and public services. However, in studies on the distribution of the carbon footprint, the scale most often used is that of households, to which the emissions of businesses producing and importing the goods they consume are then attributed. Consequently, several crucial aspects of companies’ carbon footprints – and, above all, their distribution across different companies – are documented only to a limited extent, if at all, even though they represent essential levers for public policy action.

Presentation

The aim of this project is to accurately document the CO₂ emissions of French companies at an individual level, a crucial step in the development of effective and equitable public policies. The aim of this methodology is to establish a framework for the systematic analysis of the distribution of companies’ CO₂ emissions and its correlation with companies’ exposure to any fiscal or budgetary measures; this framework will thus enable the environmental profile of companies to be assessed according to whether they are more or less favoured by a particular fiscal or budgetary measure.
