This project aims to understand why girls fall behind in mathematics from Year 1 onwards. To this end, the project draws on national assessments administered to all pupils across the country at the start of Year 1, halfway through Year 1 and at the start of Year 2 since 2018. This data is combined with information on parents’ socio-occupational status, the teaching staff and the general characteristics of schools in order to identify any factors that may lead to academic specialisation from the start of Year 1.
