The lack of statistical data on the situation and needs of carers of older people or people with disabilities of all ages – in terms of both socio-economic factors and health – is frequently highlighted by those involved in the public debate, as was the case, for example, during the ‘Old Age and Independence’ in 2018–2019. The apparent lack of knowledge on this subject stems not so much from the absence of databases as from a failure to make use of the available data and to publish analyses derived from it.
Against this backdrop, the Institute for Public Policy (IPP) and the Directorate for Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (DREES) have joined forces to pool their expertise on the subject of carers and on the statistical sources that can be utilised.
