The length of one’s working life plays a key role in the French pension system, not only in determining the amount of the pension, but also in determining when one can retire. Some people in the public debate believe that we should go even further and remove all reference to statutory retirement ages, so that only the recognised length of service determines the retirement age — more specifically: that everyone should be able to retire as soon as they have reached the required legal length of service.
