The very sharp economic and social disparities in Île-de-France give rise to significant educational inequalities between different areas. These inequalities appear to stem largely from factors outside the education system which shape society and therefore limit the scope for schools to take action to significantly reduce segregation.
Nevertheless, these factors contribute significantly to the local segregation experienced by secondary school pupils, who most often choose a school very close to where they live (one to two kilometres for the majority of them).
