Context

Agirc-Arrco, which manages the contributions and retirement pensions of employees under the general scheme and the agricultural scheme, pays out €84 billion in retirement pensions each year and covers more than 70 per cent of the employed working population. Given the scale of the coverage, it is essential to have a precise understanding of the career paths of Agirc-Arrco contributors and their retirement behaviour, in order to predict the long-term financial implications and assess the impact of past or future reforms.

Presentation

The first partnership with Agirc-Arrco began in 2016. During this partnership, the IPP carried out research into fertility and marriage patterns, as well as career trajectories. In particular, this research enabled the development and refinement of the MiSRAA microsimulation model. This model allows for short- and long-term projections regarding the population of Agirc-Arrco policyholders. It is used by both social partners during annual negotiations on the management of the scheme and also informs the forecasts of the Pension Policy Council (COR).
The partnership was renewed in 2022; this renewal covers two areas of study: inequalities in life expectancy based on career paths, and the modelling of retirement behaviour. This research will provide a better understanding of pension inequalities over the life cycle. Beyond the scope of academic research, it will also feed into the MiSRAA model to improve its predictions.
