Evaluation of a continuing professional development programme for teachers

Context

The LECTURE programme aims to improve the professional training of teachers of the final year of nursery school by offering them a structured method for preparing children for reading. This method, developed by the association ‘Agir pour l’Ecole’, is a synthesis of the best teaching practices established by the National Reading Panel in the United States. The guiding principles of this method are to begin phonological development early (around the age of 5), work in small groups, regularly assess progress, and tailor the learning content as closely as possible to the pupils’ existing knowledge.

Presentation

The implementation of a structured approach to teaching reading in the final year of nursery school within the French national education system raises challenges that go beyond the scope of cognitive psychology or educational science. Beyond the effectiveness of the method, this research project focuses, on the one hand, on the link between professional training and teachers’ practices and, on the other hand, on how these practices may influence pupils’ progress. The evaluation will be based on a group of control schools, carefully selected by the French Ministry of Education (DEPP).
