This report documents, as accurately as possible, trends in enrolment in preparatory classes and the grandes écoles since the mid-2000s. The study adopts a quantitative approach based on a very rich set of administrative data which, until now, has not been systematically analysed. This data is used to characterise changes in the profile of students on these courses across several dimensions: their social background, gender, geographical origin and previous educational history.
To what extent have the grandes écoles become more accessible since the mid-2000s?
The aim of this report is to determine whether the initiatives introduced over the past fifteen years or so to broaden the recruitment base of the grandes écoles have
in fact succeeded in diversifying the profile of their students, based on sound empirical evidence.
