Removing barriers to entry into vocational training: an evaluation of the “Fais-moi une place” scheme in Seine-Saint-Denis

Context

The economic literature shows a certain consensus regarding the difficulty women face in retaining or returning to work after having children. Among the possible factors, the inability to arrange childcare is potentially a significant barrier. Furthermore, Pora & Wilner (2019) show that the impact of childbirth is particularly pronounced for women whose earnings were low prior to giving birth, and that this impact stems mainly from reduced labour market participation: the study of barriers to accessing training for those furthest from the labour market is of particular importance in this regard.

Presentation

This is the finding of the charity ‘Fais-moi une place’. Based in Seine-Saint-Denis, this charity offers an innovative solution to this problem. It is based on the observation that, amongst the most disadvantaged groups, the failure to make use of childcare is due to a lack of information: people are sometimes unaware that childcare services are also available to them and do not know the steps they need to take to access early years childcare solutions. The teams running the ‘Fais-moi une place’ scheme therefore offer to support beneficiaries through these procedures. The aim of the project is to assess the programme’s impact on women beneficiaries’ entry into training and employment.
