Context

Over the past two decades, a growing number of countries have introduced centralised procedures to regulate enrolment in the various higher education programmes. As these procedures contain a wealth of information on students’ educational aspirations, the characteristics of the courses for which they may apply, and the criteria used to rank applicants, these procedures offer promising, albeit as yet under-exploited, opportunities to better understand how educational pathways diverge at the point of entry into higher education. Between 2008 and 2017, the regulation of enrolments in the first year of higher education was managed by the Admission Post-Bac (APB) procedure, which was replaced in 2018 by the Parcoursup platform.

Presentation

By drawing on the wealth of data collected by these platforms to analyse the selection process that takes place after the baccalaureate, the ANR APB project aims not only to advance scientific understanding of the mechanisms governing enrolment in higher education, but also to help improve the effectiveness and fairness of the process of guiding sixth-formers in their choice of study programmes.
