This project analyses the consequences of the decline in school enrolment on the organisation of the French education system. It examines how the decline in pupil numbers is changing the requirements for teacher recruitment and deployment, the evolution of class sizes, and the balance between state and private education. By drawing on detailed administrative data from the DEPP, it aims to document these trends over the recent period and to shed light on the public policy trade-offs presented by this unprecedented demographic context, between controlling expenditure, improving teaching conditions and the regional distribution of resources.
