Since 2014, the L’Oréal Foundation’s ‘For Girls in Science’ awareness programme has been offering one-hour classroom sessions led by women with a scientific background (L’Oréal Group employees or young female researchers). These sessions aim to challenge stereotypes associated with scientific careers and the role of women in science, with a view to making science-related subjects more appealing to young girls. This project evaluates the programme’s impact during its second year of implementation, in 2015–2016, across the three school districts of Île-de-France: Créteil, Paris and Versailles. The evaluation measures the impact of the L’Oréal Foundation ambassadors’ interventions on pupils’ career choices and on their perceptions of science and female scientists, in both general and technological second-year classes and in scientific final-year classes. It is based on a randomised controlled trial protocol, implemented in around 100 secondary schools taking part in the pilot scheme.
