Education

Education spending is the largest item in the French state budget. The level and the distribution of education spending constitute an essential issue for public policy as human capital investment plays a large role in the growth and the distribution of national income.

Education policy comes in a variety of forms relating to both the organisation of the school system (definition of the curriculum, degree of autonomy in institutions, position of the private sector, etc.) and the allocation of financial and human resources within this system (recruitment and assignment of teachers, allocation of funding, etc.).

IPP Focus. The work of IPP researchers relates in particular to the returns to education, the effects of student assignment systems (school zoning, school choice mechanisms), the efficiency of the allocation of education resources (class size, school schedules), student counselling and mentoring and the impact of financial assistance in higher education.
